Adult Patients

You are never too old to have orthodontic treatment! You are never too old, period!

We always enjoy working with adult patients and are proud of the many options that we have to treat them, such as clear and metal braces (bonded to the outer surfaces of the teeth), braces on the insides of the teeth, and clear aligners.

Not wanting to smile for photos or laugh in public with friends are just two examples of adults being self-conscious about the appearance of their teeth. While people tend to associate orthodontics with children, over thirty percent of all orthodontic patients are adults, eighteen to eighty years of age. That percentage keeps climbing, as adults realize the return on their orthodontic investment with better dental health, tooth longevity and a nicer smile.

The immediate benefits, straight teeth and a great smile, can also result in a vast improvement in one's self esteem, which often has a positive impact on careers and personal relationships.

As more and more adults witness how easy it is for children to undergo almost pain-free orthodontic treatment, preconceived ideas of braces based on childhood memories have changed. Now, many self-referred adults book their own orthodontic consultation, and in some cases, even pair up to have treatment with their children.

The good news for adult patients is that there is no age limit for receiving orthodontic treatment, as long as the health of the dentition and the supporting tissues is good. There is no difference in results or treatment time for adults when compared with adolescent orthodontic patients. In addition, adult patients are often more motivated and meticulous with oral hygiene, and sometimes treatment is faster than for a comparable adolescent case.

In certain situations, crowns (caps), bridges, veneers and implants are impossible for your dentist to do prior to repositioning of teeth by orthodontic means.

When left untreated, many orthodontic problems become worse. Corrective treatment by an orthodontic specialist is often less costly and more conservative than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years. Orthodontics followed by bleaching may also be the most conservative option instead of costly and irreversible invasive cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Treatment in a non-growing patient can vary from simple closing of front spaces or realignment of crowded teeth, to a complete rehabilitation of a neglected mouth that can take about two years, and sometimes is followed by additional cosmetic dental work.

New dental technology has made the process easier and more effective than ever, with less discomfort, fewer office visits and shorter treatment times. Better bonding techniques, lighter, less noticeable wires, miniaturized or clear appliances and even "invisible" braces have all encouraged adults to seek orthodontic treatment.

Simply put, it is one of the best investments you can make in your appearance and your health.

Give us a call in Elmhurst or Downers Grove if you think you'd enjoy these benefits and treatment options. We are always happy to answer any of your adult orthodontic questions!
